Why does my wig shed?Updated 15 days ago

Some level of shedding is completely normal with wigs and does not mean there is a fault.

All wigs, including high-quality human hair wigs, will shed slightly over time due to wear and handling.

Why shedding happens

Wigs are constructed differently from natural hair.

Because the hair is:

  • Hand-tied or sewn into the cap
  • Not attached to a living scalp

a small amount of shedding is expected during use.

Common causes of shedding

1. Normal wear and brushing
Daily brushing and styling can cause loose strands to come away over time.

2. Lace and construction areas
Shedding can occur more around:

  • Lace fronts
  • Parting areas

as these are delicate sections of the wig.

3. Tangling and knots
When hair becomes tangled and is brushed out, shedding can increase.

4. Dryness or lack of maintenance
Dry hair is more prone to breakage, especially in human hair wigs.

5. Improper handling
Pulling, aggressive brushing, or rough washing can increase shedding.

What is considered normal

It is normal to notice:

  • A few strands when brushing
  • Light shedding during washing
  • Gradual shedding over time

This is part of the natural lifespan of any wig.

How to reduce shedding

You can minimise shedding by:

  • Brushing gently from the ends upward
  • Detangling regularly to avoid knots
  • Using appropriate wig care products
  • Avoiding excessive heat or tension

Proper care plays a major role in maintaining the wig.

Setting realistic expectations

We always want to be clear:

  • No wig is completely shed-free
  • Shedding will increase over time with wear
  • Proper care reduces, but does not eliminate, shedding

Our recommendation

To keep shedding to a minimum:

  • Handle your wig gently
  • Maintain a consistent care routine
  • Avoid pulling or excessive styling

Important

Shedding is a normal characteristic of wigs and is not considered a fault. Shedding caused by improper care or handling is not eligible for return or refund.
