How do I wash my wig?Updated 15 days ago
Washing your wig correctly is essential to maintain its softness, shape, and lifespan.
The process differs slightly depending on whether your wig is synthetic or human hair, but the key is to be gentle and avoid over-washing.
How often should I wash my wig?
- Synthetic wigs: every 10–15 wears
- Human hair wigs: every 7–10 wears or as needed
Washing too frequently can shorten the lifespan of your wig.
Washing a synthetic wig
Follow these steps for best results:
1. Detangle first
Gently brush your wig from ends to roots to remove any knots.
2. Use cool water
Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as this can damage the fibres.
3. Add a small amount of wig-friendly shampoo
Submerge the wig and gently swish it through the water. Do not rub or twist.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse with clean, cool water until all product is removed.
5. Condition (optional)
Apply a small amount of conditioner to the ends if needed. Avoid the roots.
6. Air dry only
Place the wig on a stand and allow it to air dry naturally. Do not use heat unless it is heat-friendly.
Washing a human hair wig
Human hair wigs should be treated similarly to natural hair, with extra care.
1. Detangle gently
Brush through the wig carefully before washing.
2. Use lukewarm water
Wet the hair evenly, keeping the direction of the hair smooth.
3. Apply sulphate-free shampoo
Gently smooth shampoo through the hair from top to ends. Do not rub or tangle.
4. Rinse and condition
Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends. Leave for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
5. Pat dry
Gently blot excess water with a towel. Do not twist or wring.
6. Air dry or style
Allow to air dry or use heat styling tools with a heat protectant.
What to avoid
- Do not use hot water
- Do not rub, twist, or scrub the wig
- Do not brush while soaking wet
- Do not use harsh or heavy products
These can damage the fibres and reduce lifespan.
Important things to understand
- Your wig may look slightly different after washing until styled
- Synthetic wigs will return to their original style once dry
- Human hair wigs will need restyling after washing
Our recommendation
- Wash gently and only when needed
- Always detangle before washing
- Allow your wig to fully dry before wearing
Important
Damage caused by incorrect washing methods or harsh handling is not considered a fault. Proper care is essential to maintain the quality of your wig.
