How do I stop shedding?Updated 15 days ago
Some level of shedding is completely normal with wigs and does not mean there is a fault.
While shedding cannot be eliminated entirely, there are ways to reduce and manage it with proper care.
Why wigs shed
Shedding happens because wigs are not attached to a living scalp.
Common causes include:
1. Natural wear and handling
Brushing, styling, and daily movement can cause strands to release over time.
2. Lace and construction
Hair is tied or sewn into the wig cap, and a small amount of shedding can occur, especially with lace areas.
3. Tangling and knots
When hair becomes tangled and is brushed out, shedding can increase.
4. Dryness
Dry hair is more prone to breakage and shedding, particularly in human hair wigs.
What is considered normal
It is normal to notice:
- A few strands when brushing
- Light shedding during washing
- Slight shedding over time with wear
This is part of the natural lifespan of any wig.
How to reduce shedding
You can minimise shedding by:
- Brushing gently, starting from the ends
- Avoiding pulling or aggressive detangling
- Keeping the hair smooth and tangle-free
- Using appropriate products for your wig type
Handling your wig with care makes a significant difference.
Washing and care tips
- Do not over-wash your wig
- Use gentle, wig-friendly or sulphate-free products
- Avoid rubbing or twisting during washing
- Always detangle before washing
Rough handling is one of the most common causes of excess shedding.
Heat and styling
- Limit excessive heat styling on human hair wigs
- Only use heat on synthetic wigs if they are heat-friendly
- Always use a heat protectant where applicable
Excessive heat can weaken hair and increase shedding.
Setting realistic expectations
We always want to be clear:
- No wig is completely shed-free
- Shedding will increase over time with wear
- Proper care helps reduce, not eliminate, shedding
Our recommendation
To keep shedding to a minimum:
- Be gentle when brushing and styling
- Maintain a consistent care routine
- Avoid unnecessary tension or friction
Important
Shedding is a normal characteristic of wigs and is not considered a fault. Excessive shedding caused by improper care or handling is not eligible for return or refund.
